SERVICES

SAFAR is able to customize each rug to your specifications, including: size, fiber, materials, color, pattern, weave, and pile. Our in-house looms are built to address different weaving techniques, textures, and customizations. We offer unparalleled quality and timely delivery.

FAIR TRADE

SAFAR works directly with Care & Fair, an India-based organization dedicated to the elimination of child labor in the rug industry. In partnership with Care & Fair, SAFAR assists industry-wide rehabilitation efforts by contributing to the education of former child weavers. SAFAR also promotes the socio-economic health of their weavers through improved work and living standards, as well as the support of equal opportunity policies that encourage women to work within all levels of the company.

SUSTAINABILITY

SAFAR values environmental responsibility. We closely adhere to India’s 14001-Certification in order to comply with current legislations, waste disposal regulations, and recycling measures. We use high quality, renewable natural fibers such as wool, cotton, silk, mohair, linen, aloe, jute, hemp, sisal and seagrass to create our carpets and rugs. Our production is carried out by hand, leaving minimal impact on the environment.

SHIRAZ ANSARI FOUNDER

Shiraz Ansari is the founder of SAFAR handmade rugs. He was born in the historic north-Indian city of Varanasi, into a multi-generational family of carpet and rug manufacturers. Shiraz grew up around the bustling energy of entrepreneurs and artisans - watching, learning and absorbing the culture of manufacturing, production, and craftsmanship. For nearly a century, his family’s passion and business continues to revolve around the creation of some of the finest carpets and rugs in their region.

An artist and designer himself, Shiraz studied at boarding school in the Himalayan Mountains and later in Mumbai, a city that further pressed his creativity. Shiraz continued his formal education in Paris, France where he pursued his love for design, art and culture. In Paris, Shiraz landed prestigious internships and employment at some of the world’s leading fashion houses, including Rick Owens and Hermès, among others. The experiences affected and refined his articulation in design.

Today, Shiraz is based in San Francisco, California where he is expanding the family business. Shiraz stands at the intersection of east and west, uniting India’s finest carpet and rug manufacturing with the influence of western culture and aesthetics. Shiraz is working with some of the industry’s most respected artisans and qualified weavers. He guides them through the creation and completion of customized rugs and carpets. In this process, Shiraz applies his own expertise in art and design while understanding and communicating the specifications of interior designers and clientele.
